there taking away alet lane. >>> at the top of the hour it is all the about hurricane earl. as howard told us the storm is moving by the outer banks. this is what it looks like in atlantic beach, north carolina. a lot of towns were evacuated ahead of the storm. the delmarva is bracing for a brush with earl later this afternoon. how are things looking right now? >> well, we somewhere are just starting to feel the tropical afcs. the wind has picked up. close to gale gale force. an the winds off the ocean has a tropical feel. so we know something is close but as howard reported really primetime for earl on the delmarva peninsula is yet to come. probably in the mid to late morning. although officials here in ocean city think it will be over by 3:00. even so, this has been an exercise in preparedness. the big gates on the sea walls slammed shut. the final preparations for keeping a menacing surf from destroying the boardwalk as earl pushes close. >> i'm excited actually. >> we're definitely going to stay. >> reporter: they put up fencing to prevent drifting sand from burying parking lots an the bo

eastbound lanes closed. drivers being forced to use that exit 87 to get on to 29 and from there they can hop on to route 40 or 99 to get around it throughout the morning rush because it looks like officials will be out there until at least 8:00 this morning. taking it to the district. we have fire activity to tell you about. it has mown pleasant closed between irving and tenth. this is in northwest. we also know that lamont is closed between 16th and 17th. we also know that 66 is slowing down. we take it outside to virginia. 234 to route 28. a lot of taillights here stacking up. the same approaching route 50 to nutley. 495 in virginia no incidents or accidents out here. but just volume and you are going to want to take it easy as you come off and on those ramps out there. you want to watch for standing water. andrea, over to you. >>> thank you, angie. >>> you know told town alexandria will see flooding in this storm. let's go live to jessica doyle. she's live along king street. how are the conditions now? >> i can tell you the rain has started to taper off a little bit. we have seen it comin

, grabbed a beer and went down the emergency chute. he is charged with criminal mischief. >>> the u.s. is bidding to host the 2018 to 2022 event and washington could host some of the games. rfk stadium held games in 1894. >>> also today employees at discovery communications head back to work. their offices are back open for the first time since the standoff. lindsey mastis live in downtown silver spring with more on the story. good morning, lindsey. >> reporter: good morning. discovery's 1900 employees were granted what is called liberal leave. that means they didn't have to come back to work until today. so far we have seen some people walking around the building but it is still early. some employees returned to the discovery headquarters the next day, right after the attacks because during the evacuation many people left their personal items like car keys, clap tops and cell phones. discovery had a dozen grief counselors on hand to help employees. >> it just makes me really sad that these kinds of senseless acts of violence are going on and people can't find a more creative way to p

, if you are heading to the pentagon metro station you want to take that detour to use the covered canopy. the good news is if i sound like i'm talk atlantic gibberish and you have to idea what i'm talking about, don't worry, metro has posted signs in the metro station to direct people as to what they need to do because of the changes. and you will have to go ahead and get used to them. they will likely stay in affect until 2012. the department of defense is working on building a security check point at the pentagon but it will be a while. it won't be complete until 2012. get used to these things. they will likely be in place until then. >> dunn sound like jibbering. but a lot of information we need to hear. >>> police hope a driver's side mirror left at the scene of a hit and run will help them to identify the car. it happened on carroll avenue and piney branch road. witnesses told 9 news now what they saw. >> she is laying face down her flip flops in the middle of the road her phone is broke and maybe she was bringing food for her family or something. >> reporter: at point we only know
